The end of the race

By Food for thought

The 70s were funky – despite the Vietnam War, Richard Nixon, Baader-Meinhof and Chomeini as a finale. The 80s began with a marching rhythm as a prelude, namely the Russian invasion of Afghanistan and the stationing of cruise missiles in Europe, escalated to the cacophony of the American Iran-Contra Affair and ended with Punk, No Future and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The 1990s brought Nirvana’s “Nevermind”, the end of apartheid, the collapse of the Soviet Union, the supposed end of history and the realisation that history continues even without the Iron Curtain – inevitably. For example the second Gulf War and the war in Yugoslavia. The daughters and sons of the 90s understood that compared to their parents, there was little to earn for them. All the more they were intoxicated by the hope of eternal fun and defiantly celebrated against the threatening end of their means.

2000 started with Eminem’s machine gun rap, a bad aftertaste called Bushido, Robbie Williams lonely run and the sobering realisation that every party has to end once. The only question now was how? The answer came by plane. And on September 11, 2001, it hit the twin towers of the World Trade Center, symbol of Western prosperity and growth.

In 2007/2008 came the next blow: the bankruptcy of the Lehman Brothers with bankers carrying file folders out of the office. Beyoncé raised with “Irreplaceable” the question: Where do I put things now?
With the beginning of the economic crisis, the ground is shaking worldwide – not only on the financial floor of the stock exchanges.

At the turn of the year 2008/2009 Kanye West appears “Paranoid” and broadcasts “Nightmares” through Autotune. But the wave of shock ebbed away. New bonuses are being granted. The hunger of those who want to hoard before the shortage comes. No trace of new consciousness and course correction! And once again the economy took off for another boom! Hooray for the numbers like in old times!

Now in free fall. It sounds like a bang before the requiem.

Imagine all of humanity is sitting together in one car. Since the 1950s, the car has been picking up speed. Accelerating in the 60s and 70s, driving in laps of honour in the 80s and 90s, braking briefly at the turn of the millennium, stopping in 2001 for a minute of mourning, braking again in 2007, but rushing from 2008 into 2009, accelerating again 2010 and running with full speed from 2011 to 2018. Directly towards a wall.

A girl steps in the way in protest. She holds up a stop sign and speaks plain words. They are meant to encourage pausing, but humanity just keeps racing, past her and straight towards the wall. Everyone knows what this wall is made of. Unleashed capitalism, advancing climate change, increasing poverty are perhaps the most important elements. Ignorance is the mortar that holds them together. There is an urgent need for humanity to slow down. But the car just keeps on racing.
What do we hear now? Squealing tires and the glassy sounds of Billie Eilish and Aurora.
The passengers in the car hold on to each other. As if to confirm that they are the kings of the road and thus the masters of the world.

Anyone who is now thinking, well I stepped out of the car because Greta is right, should honestly ask her- or himself: Did I really get out of the car or am I just pretending or imagining it?

In fact, the car is still driving. Not quite as fast as before, because it was decelerated majestically by Corona, the microscopic queen and new ruler of the world. And now the occupants of the car are thinking about how they can leave this crown on the left hand and drive around it on the right to be able to race away from this ugly coeval as fast as possible. Namely further and directly towards the wall.

The order of the day would be to stop, get out and continue on foot. Or even take a bicycle.

What might happen if we refuse?

Perhaps Simon & Garfunkel’s “The sound of silence” will be heard in a modern version: “Hello darkness, my old friend …”

Civilisation, as we had it, if it would be accelerated to high speed again, will drive us on crash course against the wall – if we don’t listen and get out of the car.
What we have learned through viral deceleration: getting out of the car seems possible.

This is the opportunity of the day. Yes, I am optimistic: this is a turning point.

All the more so as we are aware of it.

Stay healthy! All my love!

Distant proximity

By Food for thought

We smile at each other from a distance. Looking at one another while our bodies have to avoid each other at a distance. When did I last shake hands with someone? I try to remember, but I can’t.
On these days of new and still unfamiliar distance, most people also avoid eye contact. They move in strange serpentines so as not to offend other passers-by. To the lowered glances, ears are often closed as well. The spacial separation is amplified by an acoustic one. Headphones emphasize the hermetic inner space for many. A casual conversation could be infectious. Our life in the new zones of deliberately protected sterility. Our life in the séparée of an increasingly rigorously partitioned and publicly defended individual sphere. A life as if behind a protective screen. It is easy to imagine the protective clothing of medical emergency workers.

A blossom that folds and closes in a paradoxical impulse back to the bud. Maybe it got too much sun.

If humanity were a child, one might think, it would push back into the womb these days.
Whole societies are in shut down and locked in. If the sky is closing, one feels the abyss of comatose standstill and could easily confuse the momentary calm with an eternal one.

“Bunker mood”, observes media theorist Peter Weibel in the present day socium. A contagious phenomenon. Every one for himself among the many. These days, the term hermit has taken on a new meaning. Welcome to the new distance society …

Maybe we have been sitting too close to each other for far too long, and this is what we have now: a virus that forces us to retreat.

Assuming that humanity has actually crawled back into the womb these days. Sure, we know, a state like that won’t last. The child must be born, even if it is called humanity. A lot of things went wrong in his previous life. Or maybe things just got terribly complicated. The economy with its swaps and flops, its derivatives and bailouts that nobody understands anymore. From consumerism and capitalism to the climate crisis, from health care to redistribution – many people have ideas, nobody knows what works anymore. The system has decoupled itself from the people. This frustrates politicians who are supposed to make sustainable and systemically relevant decisions. And it depresses the technocrats who want to optimise systematically. Many people think that little of it succeeds. Capitalism continues to bloat. The world is getting hot flashes. Fire is rolling like a fever in some areas. In others, water eats the coasts. We mourned it, yet we kept taking off and flying. But now finally the planes stay on the ground. For this a virus has landed. It took this arrival in horror to make us pause.

The era of air travel and mass mobility will perhaps be remembered as the era of frenzied standstill. Now begins the era of the standstill of frenzy (Weibel). Airfields where no planes take off, orphaned highways and railway lines, roads so empty that you can picnic on them. A slowdown of life. The quiet cities seem like invitations to wander in them again. The air is better than ever these days.

Suppose not only individuals, but whole civilisations could be reborn. They rise, they fall, they perish, a new one comes into life. One thing is certain, no civilisation is born twice.
What’s obviously dying out: physical proximity. Students in overcrowded lecture halls, employees treading on each other’s toes in offices, shopping-hungry consumers pushing past each other in shopping malls, fans crowding together in stadiums and at festivals, parades with thousands of participants – all that is yesterday’s news. Prohibited in the present, feared in the future because potentially dangerous. Welcome to the new distance society …

Because proximity has become dangerous, we will set up in the distance.

“Only temporarily,” contradict the backward looking among the prophets.
I think they are wrong. After this coronavirus will be before the next and new one. Corona demonstrates that the mass accumulations of modernity offer too much proximity for viruses. They jump from one to the next, microscopic free-riders of mobility, travel by plane as fast as an arrow, hop across national borders and spread congenially continental.
The holiday society in particular has waged war against nature, claims Weibel. “The virus forces us to end this war.”
Hopefully the world will recover now. Hopefully it will also be beneficial for the people. And we’ll find ways to be close to each other even far away. That’s probably what rebirth is all about.

Enjoy the silence! Stay healthy!

P.S. Just received an audio file via mail – allegedly a message from the Association of German Psychiatrists: “Since we are flooded with calls, we would like to inform you, dear fellow citizens, that it is absolutely normal in the time of quarantine that you start talking to the walls, plants and other things. Please call us only if they answer to you. Thank you.”

What is called life?

By Food for thought

“Dear friend and fellow prisoner,” a friend’s message to me today began, “let’s celebrate…”

What? His birthday. Online, in a chat room, as he explains.

What has changed in my life in recent weeks, I have recently been asked.
Everything. To put it bluntly. I’m now getting emails calling me a fellow prisoner.

I thought I was free.

My friend, to make this clear right away, has not committed any crime, has not been convicted of any crime and is therefore not serving any sentence in a state prison.
Nevertheless, a few sentences later in his mail the term “imprisonment” appears. Again as if I was part of it.

The Aztec goddess “Coatlicue” (“The One with the Snake Skirt”): She embodies, it is said, the ambivalence between intimacy and autonomy. This can also be seen in the context of society as a whole.

It cannot be overlooked now: certain freedoms that were once taken for granted, are suddenly curtailed. Suppose there was a need for me to buy new jeans – difficult these days. The relevant shops are closed. Sure, I would still get some pants if I needed them. Probably none that I like, though. At my favourite café the doors are barricaded. Not even coffee to go. Kreuzberg in an artificial coma. An unfamiliar picture.

Since gatherings of more than two people are prohibited in Berlin, I only meet friends individually. At least that intensifies the conversation. I had to cancel seminars. For a visit to my practice you now need a good reason. Many things must now be solved by telephone.
Hardly anything still works as before. The present seems so new, you’d think it had just been invented.

I then called my friend to speak as a fellow prisoner about his and my imprisonment.
“Been out for a long time today”, he explains and reports on an extended walk. Between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. he had walked from Kreuzberg to the eastern outskirts of Berlin. “Walked fast, got far. Wonderful in the sun. I saw my city with new eyes.”
I hear joy in his voice and I notice, “On the loose, if I understand you correctly.”

I know people who take social distancing very seriously. For example, a young couple from Spain lives in the house next door. They haven’t left their shared apartment for about three weeks. Letters and parcels as well as food deliveries have to remain outside the apartment door for 24 hours as a quarantine measure. They communicate with neighbours by calling through the closed door. Only when the hallway is empty do they move the deliveries in.
The real prison these days is fear. Am I imprisoned by fear? I would deny it. I think it’s likely that I will be infected with the new virus in the near future. I am not afraid of that. I am more concerned about the loss of individual freedom of movement and the dismantling of democratic rights. We will soon know how justified this concern is.

As uncomfortable as social distancing may seem. I have no serious problem with it. In fact, suddenly people I know only by sight greet me from afar. And as they greet, they smile. In the past, they almost ran over me, stomped past me without a greeting, without looking at me, and they didn’t smile either.
The (almost) standstill in the mechanics of the city creates a whole new, unusual freedom. Sounds probably strange, maybe also not very empathetic, because people suffer from the current viral consequences.
But while things are currently getting tight in some areas, for example in your own home, when the ceiling slowly falls on your head, new rooms are opening up at the same time. Even if they are thought spaces.
What do I want? What do I need? What do I enjoy? What do I love? What frightens me? What gives me courage? What gives me joy? How can I find fulfilment?
The slowing down of the world almost automatically generates a concentration on essential questions. The fog of distraction lifts. Answers become visible.
I too wandered through the city today. Explorations in the new space of silence. In some faces I believed to read findings.
What does life mean to me?, I thought.

Is happiness standing at the foot of a mountain asking, “Shall I come up to you?
The mountain answers: Stay where you are! I’m coming down to you!

Even if nobody can say exactly what life actually is – I feel we have every reason to kneel before it.

Spiritual Self-Defense, part 4

By Nachrichten

In everyday life, that’s not a secret, a lot can affect your mind. The result is heaps of thoughts which tend to become mountains. Those piles of thoughts can rise particularly harsh in sleepless hours between three and five o’clock in the morning. Thoughts, as rugged as bare rocks. And so bleak.
In the depressive phase of the 24-hour cycle, productive and meaningful thinking is almost impossible, meaningless pondering is all the more likely. This is a fact studied and proven in various psychological studies.
Who lies awake between three and five in the morning, thinks of unpleasant things as well as unfinished ones and does not stop this thinking, which provides very often sincere problems next morning. And if it was just the echo of a bad mood, which began in the very early morning hours, now it has the tendency to ruin the following day.
Whatever a person thinks between three and five o’clock in the morning, it is almost never positive. Almost never does optimism and enjoyment of life emerge from it. But almost – without exception – the opposite.
Therefore, it is helpful to think as little as possible during these times. At best, nothing.

Huh, how am I supposed to do that if I’m awake between three and five in the morning and my brain is wriggling because I can not think of anything other than lounging around and thinking?
My answer: it is okay to think. As long as it is meditative.
Ah, what exactly is meant by that?

Ideally, a procedure in two stages. First, by repeating a sequence of syllables whose only quality should be that it makes no sense. Only a consistently meaningless sequence causes an effect in the brain, which could be called tabula rasa – empty sheet. Example: Manigo-Remergo-Nangilomenko. Completely meaningless. You could try to think of a meaning. But any sense bounces off the bundled senselessness of this sequence of syllables.
This first stage of the method consists in repeating this or a similar sequence of syllables in your mind. Think the sequence without a break. And exclude other thoughts by doing so. In fact, other thinking is locked out.

Question: If I repeat this meaningless sequence of syllables in sleepless nights or morning hours – will I not be all the more awake? Maybe even agitated?
Answer: At the first attempts maybe, but then comes the resting affect. The empty sheet in the brain, the tabula rasa, guarantees a state of inner silence. This requires some practice. But after a few days, at the latest 14, the fruits are to be enjoyed: namely, more sleep in the same night and more energy the next day.
Then the second stage is used: breathing meditation.

How? Very easily. By watching the breath at the tip of the nose. By inhalation. When exhaling. Only that. And thoughts may come and go. There is no reason to hold on to it.
At this point, further questions arise: But how is this supposed to work in practice with the first and second stages? When do I think of the meaningless sequence of syllables and when do I observe my breath at the tip of my nose?
Answer: Who lies awake at dawn meditates most powerfully with the meaningless sequence of syllables. And that with open end.

When you wake up the next morning then watch your own breath at the tip of the nose for five to ten minutes. Later, levels one and two can be combined. So, for ten minutes, do the meditation with the meaningless syllable sequence, then the breathing meditation for another thirty minutes.

And now to the last question: Why is this part of a manual for spiritual self-defense? What does one thing have to do with the other?
Answer: a lot. People who have problems with harmful energies, people who feel energetically-informally burdened or attacked – these people are very often awake early in the morning. And if they are not awake early in the morning, they suffer from thought carousels during the day. So thoughts that revolve around certain, not pleasant topics, thus keep them away from more pleasant thoughts. Meditation is the only measure known to me which solves this problem permanently.

Spiritual Self-Defence, part 3

By Nachrichten

Three times a week: Taekwondo, Korean martial arts. Which means running, jumping, kicking, hitting. And all this with the utmost mindfulness and respect for your own physical possibilities. Yes, and those of your partner during sparring. I address my teacher as a “master”. I am the oldest student he has ever accepted.

Some people have difficulties reconciling my enjoyment of taekwondo with my work in my practice.
Understood. Martial Arts and Spiritual Medicine do not work like siblings. However, Taekwondo declares itself a peaceful Olympic sport, it comes from the military. And thus forms a counterpoint to the spiritual healing practiced by me, which certainly has not the slightest militaristic features. At this point, there is some friction in my biography, and some people find that questionable.
Me too. In my understanding in the sense of an invitation to ask. Therefore, I allow myself the following consideration: meditation, introspection, mental refinement, spiritual growth, spiritual knowledge, experiences of unity, moments of oneness as well as impulses of healing (healing of another person as well as of being healed) have nothing aggressive. Where does a person show himself more non-violent, pacifistic, and thus less fearful and more affectionate than in these moments, when his innermost self rises and the inner diamond shows itself, namely, as a bright light of internalized love?

All the more necessary is a shelter to protect the inner light, the unfolding of refinement and agape. If the protective space is missing, the light may only glow, could be extinguished in windy moments, gleaming again to extinguish once more, when the gray shadows of an ever again brutal world seemingly mercilessly and carelessly throw themselves over you with their sometimes lightless blackness.
That happens. Even if you do not want to admit it. And that results in burdens. Mental. And energetic.

What are those people who feel energetically burdened?
Without exception, people with a fine sensorium: highly sensitive.
The more sensitive someone is, the more rude feels what seems to be rough. Therefore, especially sensitive people should learn to protect themselves more effectively, perhaps to defend themselves, even to fight when necessary.
You may find this annoying or inappropriate. Especially in the consciousness of your own fineness and delicacy, words such as protection and fighting seem almost vulgar.
However, those who do not protect themselves, do not defend themselves and in principle reject the fight for their own well-being may be faced with a much greater problem. Spiritual Self-Defense provides an answer. The result of my experiences in Taekwondo and my work as a spiritual healer.

Spiritual Self-Defense, part 2

By Nachrichten

Invisible, inaudible, but all the more noticeable – namely, painful. That’s a problem. Spiritual Self-Defense is about getting rid of this problem.
In the landscape of consciousness, strange forces are at work, even windy beings are up for mischief. This is no reason to be scared, but a reason to be more mindful.
Energy parasites and suckers, grippers, adhesives and invaders do exist. That will be discussed. Because they could be energetic-informal enemies of the personal well-being and thus enemies of good health and vitality.

Some negative phenomena are split-off impulses of people who develop a substantial self-existence after the split-off. Born of the impulses greed, jealousy, envy, resentment, hatred, self-condemnation, persecution, tyranny and murderous intentions.
When a certain intensity threshold is exceeded, the impulses mentioned acquire a kind of independent life. Essentially set in the world they wander around and attach themselves to other people. Depending on the weakness and disturbed well-Being of a person, they could become a burden, they can create a disease, they can even tear the person into an abyss.
This energetic-informal disaster in which a person can land in succession is often classified by psychologists as diagnostic terms from the neurotic or psychotic group of forms.
But that may be misleading. Maybe the person just got infected.

Energetic-informal parasites, also called destructive elementals, can be recognized by the fact that they suck. They suck life energy and strength, resilience and vitality, joy and hope, love and dedication. They are enemies of well-being and thus of personal freedom.
What to do about it?

  1. Parasites of any kind are to be avoided.
  2. If you can not avoid them, it helps to let them vanish into nowhere.
  3. If you fail to let them go, then it is helpful to oppose them from a position of power, namely, out of the so called inner center.
  4. If you can not hold the position of the inner center, breathing calmly helps.
  5. If calm breathing does not succeed, then quick breathing helps. But only in combination with escape at the right moment.
  6. If escape is not possible, then it is advisable to defend yourself resolutely and consistently.

Spiritual Self-Defense is mental martial arts. Physical protection can be very useful. Likewise protective objects. But especially important are spiritual methods and means – manifested and concentrated through the power of visualizations, imaginations and clear intentions.
In the Landscape of Consciousness, a logical order and thus resilient harmony arise from consistency. Growing harmony in your own consciousness is like the gentle crescendo of a consonance. Think of a very slowly increasing orchestral sound. Everything starts quietly and gently coordinated to slowly increase. Like a wave that rises.

Spiritual Self-Defense, part 1

By Nachrichten

There are strange attacks.
They come face down.
Are not visible.
Are not audible.
Noticeable but all the more.
Mostly painful.
Until those who are under attack learn to defend themselves.
Some attacks seem to originate from places, others from people, others only at certain times from certain people in certain places. Some attacks have a long-lasting effect, others only for a short time, some are immediately noticeable, others show up only with a certain delay.

However: this is not an invitation to let yourself carried away by fear of energy suckers, harmful extraneous energies and energetic squatters.

Most people who feel squattered bear an emotional burden but are not energetically squattered. Not a few people who are affected by energy suckers are physically and mentally weakened, but not necessarily energetically robbed. If it were as simple with energetic squatters, as some people believe, then the whole world would be squatted. But the world is not. In fact, energetic squatting is a rare phenomenon. If some areas and entire cities were so haunted by harmful energies as some people claim, then they would be abandoned by all good spirits. But they are not. Harmful energies and so-called energy suckers are less widespread than certain speakers like to proclaim.
As your author – and this is very important to me – I do not want to run the business of fear. Some representations related to Spiritual Self-Defense are drastic, but not an invitation to make them bigger in your own imagination. The wonder of the world is that it is made of energy – in many different forms and with different attributes. Some energy that can be dealt with is violent. One more reason to approach the topic with a calm mind …

Perhaps, dear reader, you have experienced something similar, as shown in the following report.

Katrin, Librarian, says: “I forgot when it started. About three years ago, I think. But it may be that the matter has been dragging on for some time and I only became aware of it three years ago. At first I just thought, something is not right here. Couldn’t say what. It was just a vague feeling. When I came home after work, I felt slain. My husband asked, is something wrong with your work? No, it’s all right, I replied. Yes, I still enjoy working with books. I love to research the stock and find hidden treasures, sometimes even lost treasures. The library I work in belongs to the university. Of course you have interesting topics to deal with. So I can say clearly that I really like my work. And in my opinion, nothing has changed in recent years. On the contrary, the better I understand myself, the more enjoyment I have in my job. But …”But?” I echoed, because she is suddenly silent and thoughtful. “… it already bothers me that I’m coming home more and more exhausted. I feel empty and can only stare at the TV to feel like an idiot. And that’s not funny at all. ”

Psychogenic health

By Nachrichten

Death by expectation of death – that was the topic of the previous article. Now the opposite: To live longer and stay healthier because of the positive expectation of a longer and healthier life.
If the expectation of death works, the contrary should work too.
Why?
Just, because it’s logical.

A car drives as long as it drives, no matter what the person behind the stirring wheel is thinking about the car. This is what most people believe, so they may wash their car regularly. On the same hand they do not constantly stroke it, do not say thank you for every ride, but are still banging the doors of their car.
Although some people seem to love their car more than other people, that does not mean that they send positive thoughts to their vehicle and do not maltreat it at the next intersection.
It’s just meant to be kicked, they think. And that’s what they do, just for fun.

A lot of people behave very similar with their body. They clean the biological vehicle regularly, sometimes touching it calmly and tenderly, but usually in a hectic pace and careless. To thank their own body – this idea would be outlandish. But to criticise it, to find it ugly, to talk badly about it and to treat it like that – seems appropriate, even entertaining.
If you act like this, you will be injured and, as a result, you may become ill, perhaps even seriously ill and therefore have to live with the consequence of a significantly shorter lifetime.
That this behaviour might be a mistake has been discussed for a long time. But how to overcame this mistake with clever reasoning, perhaps not yet.

Suppose human bodies are like cars, call them the vehicles of life – how important would be what the drivers think about them? And what kind of effect would their behaviour as drivers have?
Well, that doesn’t matter, some drivers answer. At a certain point, everything breaks, especially when the expiry date has been exceeded. No matter what one thinks about it … When you sit behind the stirring wheel, you can think what you want – ugly, cynical, negative, humorless, loveless und dumb thoughts – as long as you look at the road and do not drive against a tree …
The car doesn’t care what the driver think about it.

That may be the small difference between a car and a body: the body cares. Back in 1993, Penebaker and Francis, two American physicans, had been able to show that positive thinking significantly increases the likelihood of surviving a cancer diagnosis. In 2006, Cohen and Pressman, also physicians, concluded in a study that people who think positive live around 10 years longer than those with negative expectations.

What is positive thinking?, you could ask now.

Quite simply: everything what you take for it.

Objection: I can not judge what is positive and what is negative, because my life is so mixed up that I’m confused.

Possible. But not so confused that you no longer know what is meant by positive and negative at all

Okay, I got it. Next question: How do I give up negative thinking altogether?

Answer: Impossible. You can not do that. But keep in min: Important is the sum. How does your negative thinking add up? Compare the quantity of your positive thinking. Is it more or less?
The sum decides where a life leads to. To more health or less. For more pleasure or less. The rest is grace.

What does that mean now?

Quite simply: that every person can move himself with mindfulness towards the good and better, but can not force it.

Spiritual Medicine means to unfold mindfulness and good intention and to seek closeness to yourself. That could be a long road. Take it with humor. Health starts in the head. That’s why health is always psychogenic. And nothing about it is coincidental.
